Managing without being in charge

Many working in organisations recognise the formal hierarchy. In most organisations a lot gets done because staff take initiatives vis-à-vis others. The marketing director explains the sales force why collecting client data is important and will "manage" this group to follow his lead, even if they do not report to him. PAs often get a lot done for the people they work for - without being in charge of the "counter-party".

Whenever jobs need to get done, we seek how to do this best and request support from others. Whenever they follow one's head, they manage without being in charge. Many do so daily without realising it. In our programmes, typically the groups develop insight in how this process works and what approaches will help them to manage.
